community collaborations

September 25, 2024, Grubb Ventures was given the Residential Sir Walter Raleigh Award for Community Appearance for The Forge at Iron Works project.  Harold K. Jordan & Co., Inc. is proud to have played a vital role as a General Contractor for the project.

Awards for this category are given for new residential development, conversion to residential use, or improvement made to existing residential areas. The entry may be for either multifamily developments or single-family developments of multiple buildings.

In the 1950s, the site housed the Peden Steel Company plant. The business was called Raleigh Iron Works until James M. Peden purchased the bankrupt steel division in 1931. Peden Steel assisted in building many structures that still stand in Raleigh today, like Bragaw Hall at NC State.

Peden took apart and moved the original steel Bow Truss building, built in the 1800s, from downtown to its current location. This is where munitions during World War I and World War II barges were produced. As a community-oriented Raleighite, Peden was inducted into the Raleigh Hall of Fame in 2010.

The Forge at Iron Works holds 220 units with 29,500 SF of retail space.  Upscale studios, 1 & 2 bedroom apartments, as it is a State-of-the-art space taking shape in Raleigh’s newest, walkable retail and restaurant district.
